GAYA: A havildar of Bihar State Armed Police (BSAP) deployed at Mahabodhi Mahavihara in Bodh Gaya was killed in accidental firing from his official carbine on its campus Friday.
The havildar was identified as Amarjit Kumar Yadav. He died on the spot. BSAP jawns are deployed in the shrine's security.
Entry of tourists and devotees inside the Mahavihara was restricted for nearly half an hour after the accident.
District public relations officer Deepak Chandra Dev said Amarjit fell on the ground after his carbine accidentally went off, as per prima facie information. "District magistrate Thiyagarajan SM, who is also the Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee chairman, visited the spot and talked to the BSAP commandant," he said.
SSP Ashish Bharti said the incident took place at around 1.40pm. "Amarjit was in the Bihar Swabhimaan battalion. His official carbine was also found near the body. Prima facie it appears that the carbine accidentally went off and the bullets hit his body. Forensic team and other investigation units were called. A thorough investigation is being done to ascertain the real cause behind the incident. The CCTV footage of the premises is being scrutinized," he said.
The SSP added: "Police recovered four empty cartridges from the spot. Four bullet marks have also been found on the body. While the FSL team stationed at Gaya collected the samples, ballistic and finger print experts also reached from Patna."
After the serial bomb blasts at Bodh Gaya on July 7, 2013, visitors have to cross through three-layer security at the Mahavihara. They have to cross through door frame metal detectors besides, frisking by hand-held metal detectors. Entry of all types of electronic gadgets is banned on the campus. Baggage scanner scans the visitors' luggage. In addition, the entire premises is covered by high-resolution night vision CCTVs.
